How do you release the tension on a spring hinge?

I was able to get the hinge off the door without disaster, but I need to reattach the hinge. I can barely hold the hinge open let alone reattach it. There is a locking pin in the side of the hinge, but that won't budge.

Anyone have a clue?

It depends on the style.

Are there a series of holes around the top cap on the hinge? Some (the cheaper ones) you put an allen in the top or bottom of the hinge, turn it (increasing pressure) to a point where you can insert something in the hole to hold it, release pressure, then readjust your allen to take off a little bit of pressure of at a time.

The pin you see is normally inserted to maintain the pressure after the adjustment is mad. It should come out after you insert the allen and turn it. Sometimes they are pretty hard to pull out.

There is a hex shaped hole in the top of the cap. I do have a hex head drill bit. The only other hole in the cap is on the side and has what I assume is the tension pin sticking out.

Will turning the hex head release the tension? I have tried to turn it with the drill, but I am afraid of stripping.

Use an allen wrench...yes one way will be forcing it against the pin, the other will relieve pressure.
