I have a yellow-deck John Deere STX-38 lawn tractor with a locked-up transaxle. These transaxles seem to be much harder to find than the hydrostatic ones. Can this conversion be reasonably done? What's involved, what else do I need to change? I hate to junk the tractor but even used transaxles seem to cost more than I paid for it.
Thanks,

I love Deere tractors and own 3, but yours has in my opinion, reached the point of no return. As you stated, a used rear axle is more $$$ than you paid for the tractor. Unless this has sentimental value, I think it's time to sell off the valuable parts like the deck, hood, motor and seat and look for a newer/better machine.

Wow, how much are they wanting for used ones? You can't find one for a reasonable price? Usually I can pick one up for around $150 when I find them. Have you checked Ebay?
