We noticed an electrical burning smell in the laundry room and I had a cycle on hand-washables recently - when I opened the washer is was still full with water and soap. I turned it off and turned the dial to rinse, it went through the agitation, but when it came time to drain, you can hear it almost clicking or grinding near the knob, like a buzzing, but nothing happens, so we shut it down? Its almost 10 years old, but I don't want to buy another. Any help is appreciated!

grinding near the timer could mean the timer is bad.
will she spin if you turn it to spin?

Need model # to help. Also check for an overheating motor.

the model number is LSR7233HQ0. It does spin on it's own, and the timer appeared to be working, it worked fine through the 1st wash and rinse cycle, it's just when it switches to drain it starts the grinding noise.

Put washer in agitation and check to see if it is agitating. Open lid and look. Dose the washer drain and not spin? Grinding noise in consul sounds like timer, grinding noise lower down sounds like a bad drive coupler.

we tried the drive coupler and it was not that, so we are going to buy a new timer and try that - process of elimination!

I would pull the cover off the timer and check for burnt contacts. The newer washer timers are much more reliable now and you may find nothing wrong there.
If contacts look good, when the washer acts up in spin, I would pull the pump and motor and turn the tranny coupler clockwise till the spin basket tries to spin. If very hard to turn with one hand, you have something stuck in the tub, or jamming brake shoes.

yes, my husband said the contacts were burnt, so he thinks that's what it is. Thanks for all of the help!

I'm not sure how he did replace the timer, but that DID fix our problem - it took him a very short time though and I didn't hear him swearing or yelling, so it couldn't have been too bad!
