I have a 10 yr old MTD Snow Blower and I cleaned out my driveway of about 3 feet of snow the other day. At the very end flames shot out the carburator and it died out. Now it will start after a lot of trying and it dies out after 30 seconds or so. Any ideas as to what may cause this?

Manufacturer and model number, etc. (all numbers) of the engine are needed before I can offer help.
Do you have or have access to tools for troubleshooting, i.e. compression tester or leakdown tester?

Did you by any chance take something into the auger (chunk of ice, hot top, phone book, news paper) etc just before it died out and shot the flames? If so you may have sheared the flywheel key and your timing is off

Being 10 years old, I would recomend cleaning the carb.

From the model number of your blower I see it has a Tecumseh model HMSK80-155693 engine.
Typically, a mechanic follows a troubleshooting routine to determine cause of the problem. Without tools to troubleshoot, you are looking for known causes.
The problem may also be with valves. I suggest you check and set valve clearance. You can check valve clearance without major effort but if it needs to be adjusted, you will need special tools to remove the valve spring keeper and spring.
If valves are OK then I would look at flywheel key and clean the carburetor as suggested by others.
