As I mentioned in my other post I want to build carraige doors (swing out style) for my 1/2 car garage. I have a plan drawn up as to how I will construct the doors but I'm on the fence regarding materials. Living in PA, I have access to a great number of suppliers at decent prices but am unsure of what material to use for this application. The doors will be painted so I was thinking clear pine, however soft maple and poplar are the same price per bd ft. We get a good bit of snow in these parts and I'm concerned about the doors durability after a few winters.
Any opinions as to what wood you might recommend?
Thanks again
Peter

Heartwood cedar or redwood, very pricey, hard to find.

Depends... kiln dried S4S Redwood & Cedar heartwood are top picks for crafting a thing of beauty, if it will be well cared for. (Teak scavenged from the floor of a used ISO refrigerated container is another top pick). On the other hand kiln dried S4S Yellow-Poplar treated with wood stabilizer then primed with oil base primer and top coated with latex will last for years at a lessor cost.
