Depending on amount of growth, a quick way to lay waste to a field of weeds, saplings, and undergrowth is to bushhog. A gasoline-powered weedeater, which offers the option to change over to a saw blade attachment, is more labor intensive but can accomplish the same work. The saw blade will cut through saplings. A bow saw or chain saw can also come in handy. If trees are undesirable, depending on size you can bring them down with a chain saw or hire the work done. You can immediately brush stump rot onto stumps to expedite decay and stop sprouting. Or, you can hire someone to bring down large trees and grind stumps.
Keep in mind that weeds tend to take over where grass does not do well. If planning on turning the acre into lovely green turf, you need to kill all weeds with herbicide (more than one application usually needed), get a soil test done, till the soil, adding amendments on second tilling, rake to remove debris (power rakes can be rented), and seed.
Your local Cooperative Extension Agent is a good source of info for gardening and landscape info in your area. The Agent can help with soil test, recommend the best grass seed and landscape plants for your specific area and provide info on care and maintenance schedule for turf.

Nope, but I've used acetic acid with good results. It's available everywhere under the name 'distilled white vinegar.'

Army-Ranger Thanks for keeping us safe!
In this area the people that are restoring natural prairies use a 50/50 mix of Round-up to keep the weed trees and bushes from coming back. After they cut them at ground level they brush on the Round-up. I use a quart mason jar 1/3 full and a throw away bristle brush attached to a stick(cable ties and duct tape work) so I don't have to bend so much. You can spray but it wastes a lot of chems. Round-up allows you to re-seed in about 10 days. Do not vegetation killer, it can stay active over a year!
I'm on my second weed whacker that you can put an 8 inch blade on, be careful it is a saw blade of sorts.
I have about 3 ac. out back that I keep the broadleaved weeds out of, and have let the grasses grow. They range from 8-40 inches tall and the "better half" mows paths in them every year(???).
Since this is "Green landscaping" you may want to look at putting in prairie grasses. There is lots of info out there, and the Co-op Extension Agent can help.
Good luck

Is a goat an option? They're great at eating weeds, they do all the work, and sometimes you can "rent" them.
