Helloo

I am wanting to decorate my bedroom as i have recently had a desk built and would just like to smarten it up.

I currently have red carpet down and would seem a waste to get rid of it as its in good condition.

My problem is i would like the room to look less femine (as it used to be my mums room) but keeping the carpet.

Would anyone be able to advise me as to what Wall colour scheme to have that would go with the red carpet, and the dark wood of my desk/Furniture?

I would like my far wall (with my tv/pc etc) to be a different colour to the rest to accent the rest of the room.

All input would be appreciated

Ta very much

:)

Hi there,

Red is a very strong color and in order to combine a red carpet + dark furniture, I'd suggest a neutral color for the walls, like an off-white.
Other color will create an additional focal point

well, you don't say whether you're male or female, so assuming you're female, i'd also suggest a fairly neutral color scheme such as black & white (or cream). depending on the fabric patterns you use, you can go very modern with this scheme (using geometrics, for example) or very traditional (using toiles & checks, for example). but the black & white won't fight with the carpet & it will actually seem like you CHOSE the red carpet as a way to punch up your black & white color scheme. and your dark woods will be great.

I once had a friend who loved red. She decorated with the English hunt scheme, including little stuffed foxes dressed in hunt clothes. She moved into a home with a hardwood floor in her sitting room where her very expensive Chinese red oriental rug fit perfectly with the soft gold couch and reddish brown wing chairs. She had a red paint custom mixed to match her rug. She hauled the rug to the paint store.

Red works well with white or off white and another strong color like green or navy blue or gold. (Stark white is out. There are many whites with many different undertones.)

Of course, one can always go red, white, and blue! A little gold mixed in would make a room very patriotic. One thing to avoid is to make the room look like a year-round Christmas room. The White House has gone with a red, white, and blue patriotic theme this holiday season.

Red is very passionate in a bedroom. You can go for a masculine theme with plaids or more feminine with white lace or other. Art, accents, and accessories should pick up the red from the floor and make the red look like it belongs.

If the area is no longer a bedroom and has become an office, perhaps a more traditional color scheme and tailored look would be what you desire. Perhaps an English library look with dark furniture. An English fox hunt picture would be a perfect color palette to inspire a color scheme.

Take note of wall color and colors in photos and accents and accessories. With a sophisticated eye, you can pull off a sophisticated room. Red is perfect for many decor styles, it does not have to be English hunt. This was just a color inspiration and an illustration of how one can go about pulling colors together. You can go modern, retro, transitional, traditional, country, rustic, or other, depending on your style.

Keep in mind other colors in your color palette. For good flow, you will want to incorporate at least one of the colors from adjacent areas into this area. Without more knowledge of your color scheme and style, it is difficult to provide accurate advice.

Without seeing the layout of the room and it's size, it's also difficult to recommend a focal wall. Typically, a focal wall is the wall that meets the wall upon entering the room. If a solid wall, this works best. If focal wall is a fireplace wall or entertainment center wall, the focal wall color can be pulled off successfully. If the office area wall is the focal point, you can be successful with another rich color in the same intensity as the red carpet. Hunter green? Navy? Other? Again, without knowing your color scheme and seeing your layout, it is difficult to make recommendations.

I agree about making the walls a neutral color like off-white and using neutral earth tones in your decorating, such as tans, browns, blacks/greys, and white would look nice and not at all feminine.
