Okay, so when I'm not out towing, my favorite pasttime is woodworking and my next project is a rather large entertainment center (Woodsmith issue #180) which, among other things calls for beveled glass in four doors. I've never incorporated beveled glass in any of my projects and I'm wondering what the cost is going to run. It calls for two each of size 5 3/8 x 14 1/16 and 10 13/16 x 8 5/16. The article says you should be able to find it at any local glass shop.

Just trying to get a feel for what to expect when I hit the glass shop.

I'm retired from the glass business and I'm shocked at the prices of everything today. I know that you will pay a minimum even though the pieces are small. Call any glass shop for a quote. If you can find a place that does their own beveling you might get a better price.

Actually stumbled across an on-line custom glass place that will do it to order, but the prices seem pretty steep, $60/ea for the one size and $35/ea for the other. That would be $190 just for the glass in this project. Ouch! Hoping locally it would be less.

That sounds about right. When we order beveled glass they usually charge you a setup fee no matter how big or small the glass is and they also charge more depending on what size bevel you want. Now a days they (Glass companies that have all the equipment) charge us for energy surcharges, delivery charges and set up charges.

Might have to think about that. There are other alternatives, of course, but the beveled glass in the plan pictures looks really nice. Fortunately I'll probably be working on it for a couple of months so I can save up to buy the glass (and the hardware called for; also not cheap).

Aww come on TG, just save a couple of tips and go order it...lol.

Or gouge a couple of A--holes when they call in the next few weeks.

Okay, not as bad as I thought; looks like about $28/ea for all four pieces. The on-line calculator gives you a variety of options and when I fiddled with the edge treatment option (pencil-polished vs flat-polished) it made a huge difference and the edge appearance is not a factor for this project.

LOL, first the phone has to ring; holiday slow-down is in full swing. :(
