The front door to my house is 96"x 36". It has steel faced with wood in between and is supported by four hinges.
On the latch side, there is an uneven gap between the door edge and the jamb - 1/4" at top to 3/4" at bottom. This gap is reflected on the hinge side also - in reverse. Despite putting a new kerf type seal, the door is drafty.
I have checked the hinge screws - they are solid and wont budge.
If I try to correct the problem by shimming the top hinges - which side should I hinge - door or the jamb? The door has window of equal length on both sides. Since there are four hinges, would it cause a probem if I shim two top hinges? I am thinking that most doors have an odd number of hinges that probably makes shimming effective.
Is it advisible to replace the hinges w/ adjustable ones?

Remove the two inner screws(1") in the top hinge, replace w/longer screws that reach the sidelite framing, but not so long as to go thru.
It definitely sounds like shimming is in order. But how long has this been a problem, new installation or not so new??? 1/4 is not too bad, 3/4 is a problem. For a prehung unit, not sure I understand the hinge side differences. Difficult to suggest without more info.
