I have a Brinks Alarm and DSL through AT&T plus AT&T landline for couple of years. I did not notice that the security device was unable to seize the phone line till I was using the phone one day while my dad was doing an alarm test. I heard the Alarm device trying to dial out couple of times but failed and it showed "CP trouble" on the pad. Meanwhile my line was not cut off. I called for Brinks service and the service man told me that with DSL, it is often not possible for the security device to seize the phone line. If he comes and manages to fix it such that it can seize the phone line, the DSL connection will be cut off each time it seizes the phone line.

They had supplied us with the Excelsus Z-A431PJ31X filter and according to their Excelsus website: line seizure should still be possible and DSL will not be affected in the event of line seizure. I noticed that the Excelsus filter has 8-conductors while the wall RJ-31x jack that Brinks installed has only 6-conductors. Does this make a differece?

Is the Excelsus website making false claims or is the Brinks service man bluffing? Or is there something I missed? I will be appreciative of any advice on this. Thank you.

This is a wiring problem. Look the link for RJ-31x wiring in the FAQ sticky. Somewhere along the line,

Yes, when properly wired, it will disconnect your phone and DSL when the alarm seizes the line. This is _normal_ and only lasts a few seconds while the alarm dials out. Normally your alarm will not be dialing unless something is wrong, yes, so DSL is not an issue.

If you have a 6 pin jack, it's _not_ an RJ31x jack.

Thanks for the info. I guess Brinks installer did not give us a proper RJ31x jack. What do you advice is the best thing to do now? Ask them come install a RJ31x jack or just try to do some re-wire in my present 6-pin jack so that the Excelsus filter can work properly.

The only solution is a proper RJ-31x jack. There is no "fix" for the incorrect jack.

Thanks again. I check if Brinks will fix it free of charge for me since I have the extended plans. If not I'll attempt to follow the FAQ and rewire replace the current jack with a proper RJ31-x.
