Our return vent is completely open due to the cover breaking. There is nothing to prevent something being sucked up in it... well it happened. A party balloon, latex, was sucked up this morning. I turned the unit off and the fan off, is this going to cause an issue or does anyone know if there is anything I can do to get it out -aside from taking apart the duct work.

If the ductwork is large enough, all the way to the furnace, then the balloon should eventually reach the furnace filter. Check the filter when the furnace is not running.
Most balloons will lose their air or gas in about a two to three weeks and during this time, it will be smaller and making it easier for it to be pulled towards the filter in case the ductwork narrows. Even if you still cannot retrive it after this time, then don't sweat it. A deflated balloon lying in the ductwork will not harm anything.

pop the reurn coming up......check your filter section might be there.....or send another balloon up the duct with some tacks taped to the top of it  with a stong rope to pull it back down
