Hello.
I have an older style door knob and lock, the kind where there is the knob and then there is a large square plate behind it. (See my crude drawing). I have no idea what this is called. Anyhow, recently, the lock on it broke. The lock was a small tab on the top that when you clicked it to the left, it was locked, and when you clicked it to the right it was unlocked. I want to know if there is some way to make the door lock again and if not where can I get the same style doorknob setup to replace it.
Thank you for your time.

What I understand is, you have a mortise type lockset. It is set into a hollowed out space in the door????? If yes, take it to a local locksmith, NOT BIG BOX. They can get things working for you.

Your drawing shows a very old rim-style lock.....they are still available...try a reputable full line hardware store, or your local locksmith can get you one....they're cheap (made in China) and they're all the same standard size.
