I have installed a new prefabed firebox in place of an old masonry chimney I demoed. Right now the box has the interior studs up and we are trying to look at different finishing options to surround the box. The entire project is 6'x6' and there is a brick hearth about 8" off the floor below the 6'x6' wall. The 42" firebox is 47"x36".

We have been thinking of using fake stacked stone (like Hearthstone / Cornado) to about 18" above the firebox and then installing a new mantel on top of sheet rock. The sheet rock would extend from the top of the stone to the top of the opening. Then trim out the sheet rock with a piece of crown or other wide trim.

Would this look good or what would be some other options?

Thanks for your help.
