I'm sorry if this question is naive. I am a vinyl newbie. You can see in the enclosed picture a rather large hole in the arm of this chair. Is a repair 1) as large as this and 2) not on a flat surface doable? Which kit should I use?

No you can not repair that. It looks like it was caught and torn the tacks on the front or also rubbed. To fix it you would undo the outside back, outside arm, the inside back on the torn side to then take off the inside arm piece that is torn. That is IF you can find matching vinyl.
The only fix I see is fill in the hole duck tape over it and use an arm cover on both arms to hide it. Not good for looks only to use.
