Could someone tell my what causes hot water to come out the top of a gas water heater.

Could be leaking from either the inlet or outlet fittings and the t&p relief valve may be mounted up there as well.

Or, as a post a few weeks ago had, your tank could be bad. If you don't find a leak at one of the inlet/outlet or T&P fittings, I'd suspect that.

Is it leaking from a fitting or through a seam in the tank?
