how would one tie into the existing roof to extend it about 10 ft over an existing deck. to be clear, this would be on the gable end of the roof and I would like to seamlessly extend the roof as opposed to using a leger lower on the gable wall.

Thanx

soquel213,

Welcome to the forums.

There are several ways this could be accomplished. Use the method that your local building dept. will approve.

The first issue will be the footings needed to support the roof. They might OK a series of posts on each side, or they may require a stem wall on each side of the deck as well as one across the end.

They might require trusses. How are you going to support the tail ends of those trusses? They may approve a beam on each side, or they might want walls.

I suggest that you go ask the plan checker at the bldg. dept. and see what he or she will approve, then submit the plans based on that when you apply for the permit.

Your new trusses will need to be same configuration as the existing house trusses. The support beam or supporting wall framing has to be at the same height as the supporting wall trusses of the house. You really need to remove some of the house roof and sheathing to stagger the sheathing joints.
