Hi. I just bought an 8' x 10' shag area rug. However, the underside feels quite scratchy.
The rug is going on top of a parkay floor. How do I prevent the carpet from scratching up the floor? I asked at two different carpet stores and got two different answers.
One said that I could put a sheet underneath to prevent it from scratching and that I should NOT use underlay, because the carpet (or underlay) would bunch up and it just wouldn't work.
The other place said to buy underlay.
Because of cost, I would prefer to just use a sheet under the carpet, but that just sounds odd to me.
Before I go moving out all the bedroom furniture to put down the carpet, should I be heading out to buy proper underlay? or not?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Cushion beneath area rugs helps prevent slipping and extends life of rug. "Bunching' of cushion beneath area rug is not a problem.
With bedroom furniture on top of rug, it is doubtful there is much possibility of rug moving or sliding. If only concern is protecting parquet floor finish from scratchy rug backing, then a sheet would likely suffice. Sheets, however, do not come in 8x10, you would need more than one.
