View Full Version : Odd metallic smell in hot water

My hot water has recently been smelling kind of metallic. It isn't a sulphur smell, so I don't suspect my anode rod. I don't have a water softener. (I am on not-particularly-hard community well water.)

Any ideas as to why this might have started to happen all of the sudden? My gas water heater is probably nearing the end of its useful life (17 years old), but I don't want to replace it yet if it will not help the problem.

The only difference between the cold water and hot water is the hot water tank, so chances are that's the problem.

a good flush out might minimize the smell.turn the gas valve to PILOT closed the cold water valve and drain it down out the bottom petcock...pop the relief to vent the balance of the water.then open the cold slightly and let it flush the bottom on the tank for 30 minutes.
