View Full Version : Toilet Question

I have two toilets in my home which are served by a septic system just for the toilets.

I removed one toilet to replace the flooring and stuffed the open drain pipe with toilet paper. Overnight, the water in the other toilet drained completely. Did having the other toilet off and the drain pipe not completely sealed create some sort of vacumm effect that caused the water to drain in the other bowl?

I don't see how. Look for another explanation.

What else could it be? The toilet flushes fine and it hasn't happened again since I re-installed the other toilet. What are the causes of water draining from the bowl? It definitely did not leak on the floor so I know the wax seal is okay.

Take your pick.

(1) Microscopic crack inside the bowl leaking water from the bowl down the drain.
(2) Wicking action by some foreign matter in the toilet trap.
(3) Venting clog or incorrect venting installation results in water flowing in the drain siphoning water from the bowl.
(4) High winds over the top of the vent pipe creating low pressure in the drain pipe, again siphoning water from the bowl.
