I know there are a ton of questions on venting, but I think I may have a more unique one.
Purchased the home a few years ago that had a pellet stove already installed. The previous owners put in a new chimney for the pellet stove and its about 15-feet high (living room addition). It all clay tiled inside about 8-inch square. Now, the existing 3 inch vent line goes through the wall (8 inch clay circular) and then goes from the 3-inch vent to a 3-to-8 inch expander. That expander piece is right were the vertical clay liner tiles meet the through wall clay section. (sorry for the bad description).
I've read that the 3-inch vent should extend to the top of the chimney for good venting. The way it is now, it actually drafts well. Yesterday was about 15 degrees out and when the stove smoked up before the fire, the smoke poured out of the chimney quickly, so I think the chimney drafts really well.
My question, since it works fine, do I need to extend the vent line, is that code? Also, sometimes when the machine is off, I get an ash smell coming from the unit. Im sure its due to the vent being open.
Thanks in advance.
