So I got my rusty old damper open and a whole bunch of dirt and ants fell out! Crazy, right?!!! So I vaccummed them all up and sprayed some chem around the fireplace. I put the paper shopvac bag in a garbage bag and put it outside. Now I figure I'll light a fire and be done with them for good. What do you say about that? I have some more cleaning to do around the smoke chamber (where the ant hill was), but it is clear now. I'll get in there with a hand brush and vaccumm after the fire is out. How would you sweep a square brick chimney anyway?

With a square brush:

I would definitely recommend a heavy duty square chimney brush. Here's another good resource.

We have been thinking about getting the chimney lined. It is a plain brick square flue, just about 9" square. A chimney guy told me ballpark $1500 and up to put in a SS flex liner. I have read about a concrete type of liner that is actually poured-in-place inside the chimney using a long ballon form. That would be sweet... probably costs a buck or two!
