Can I just pick out some nice hinges and 2 pieces of tempered glass to make my own fireplace doors? I'm thinking of fastening them directly to the brickwork, no frame at all. Think it would work out OK? I'm just not finding anything to fit my opening (28") or my budget. Some of these semi- custom doors sell for as much as $2000!:madhell:

Hi Milemarker, this is not my field, but I have used tempered glass and I don't think it is the same as heat treated. If I remember correctly, the tempered is the stuff that breaks into a million pieces so it won't pose a safety hazzard. But the temps of a fireplace, I'm guessing, not.
But those prices, I would think you could but a whole insert stove for that. Let's hope someone posts with some real numbers.

Good luck
Bud

Hey Bud-
I probably could get an insert for the same as some of these doors, but I want my old brick fireplace. They say they add a lot more warmth and are just better overall. I'd have to agree.:D
I think tempered glass is stronger, not sure if it acts like safety glass. The door co.'s say they use tempered glass, but either way I'd be sure to have the proper glass made up for me. I was thinking I'd have 2 doors made, 14x26 each with a couple holes put in for the hinges to fasten to. Probably have a few more holes for knobs too....

Actually, I found some doors from Thermo-rite that would fit very well. They tell me they will be about $600 and must come thru a dealer. What a pain in the butt!

There are glass doors out there that will fit your width for alot less than that. I just purchased two sets of doors for a two sided fireplace from one of the big box stores and they were around $500.00 for both delivered to my home. Hope that helps.

Tempered glass is safety glass and it will pop into a million pieces when broken. Heat treated glass is a heat treatment to make it stronger but it's not safety glass. Either might work but if it gets too hot they WILL break. What you need is Pyrex glass that is heat resistant ( like bakeware) and will not break with the heat.
Pyrex glass in flat sheets is VERY VERY expensive especially if you need a custom size with holes or cutouts for hinges.
