Unhappy gas stove problems
We just purchased a two year old jotul gas stove. It is direct vent and when we light it it shuts off after 10 seconds. We had a plumber do the vent system but the dealer is saying it sounds like a vent problem. We have a snorkel vent that is in a window well two feet below grade. Below the bottom of the snorkel vent is a foot and a half space. Does this sound like a vent problem or something else. The flame is blue colored no matter if we have it on low or high it goes out in about 10 seconds. :wall:

Hi npanz, We have a similar problem on a Jotul NG stove. Ours is a direct vent also, but set up as a "B" vent. Our stove lights then burns for about 20 seconds and shuts off completely. A few suggestions: If you have a venting problem you can identify it by opening the door to the stove, lighting it, and seeing if it stays on. I don't know which model you have but opening the door on ours was a matter of removing some screws keeping the door sealed. The idea is if the fire can breathe from the room, but not from the chimney, or other, vent set up when the door is closed you've got a vent problem. As I understand it, there are a few other possible sources of your (our) trouble. The thermocouple, the thermopile, and/or the "spill" switch. The thermopile and thermocouple maintain the pilot light when off and the fire when on through tiny electronic impulses created by heat. I may have it backwards but the thermopile does the pilot and the thermocouple regulates the flame when the stove is on. If either are bad the stove will not run. Ask you local stove shop about these and they'll hopefully give you more detailed accurate info. The "spill" switch is up high in the back of the stove at the beginning of the venting. It will shut off the stove if it senses over firing, flames that are too high, or too much heat. If its burned, or otherwise not working it will shut your stove off quickly. I believe you can bypass the spill switch fairly easily to test it by identifying the wire that goes up to it in the back of the stove, follow the wire down to the terminals under the stove, and connect a wire between the two terminals (or hold one there by hand). This will bypass the spill switch. If the stove runs while the spill switch is bypassed, it's the spill switch. As far as flame color...blue is good. The gas is burning well and clean. When the flame is too orange, it's burning less clean...sooty...IMHO. How clean is the stove? Is there lots of soot at the bottom of the pan inside? Hope this helps and good luck!!! Jotul as a company is not forthcoming with any helpful info when you call them.
