31 year old two story house with a constant problem in 3 of 5 sink faucets, COLD water smells like skunky after 1 day of not being used, sometimes only 1/2 a day not used. You let the water run for 30-40 seconds and it goes away. The other 2 faucets go unused for several days and have no problem smell at all. We do have a water softener. What can cause this oh great Plumbing God and how do I fix the problem? I have not tasted this nasty water as I suspect it before I drink or brush my teeth. I am but just a King so I call upon thee to help me.

Is there more than one riser pipe feeding the water to the sinks? If so, are all 3 sinks with the problem on the same riser? If there is only one riser for the entire house, are the three sinks all on the first floor?

What wated softener system is being used and are there filters that need to be changed?

Thanks for the ?, The softener is a Kenmore Super 80 and has no filter, the sinks in ? on on 3 seperate risers from the main pipe after the softener. They are on seperate floors and 1 is in a double sink with only one that stinks. The pipes are all copper. The toilets(3) and 2 showers do not have any smell of sour water. The kitchen just recently started to smell but has not compared to the bathroom sinks up and downstairs. HELP!

It sounds like you need to eliminate the softener.

clean out the salt and run a heavy load of clorox through the pipes that are smelling. check for any iron pipes any where in your system, it sounds like you have iron bacteria somewhere in the system, they eat iron and emit a sulfur smell as a byproduct.

I HAVE SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW AND ALL OF MY PIPES ARE COPPER. The water is too hard not to have a softener, how else could you get the contamination in the system? Perhaps the solder for the connections of the copper pipes? How do I flush the system?

I don't think it's the solder. Exactly, how does it soften the water?
