I have been battling my heat pump over the last two years. I feel as though it is using excessive electricity during the heating season. I don't use it during the summer much. I have a digital thermometer located at the exit of the air handler and have been monitoring it. Last week I had a tech check out the system and he told me at first that he thought there was a restriction (either air or liquid) after monitoring with the gages. We went inside, checked filters, checked blower setting, checked inside coil, everything was good. He then went outside, checked ambient temp, checked gages and said I was low on freon. This could be true because last winter a txv was replaced (Different tech and company said there was a line restriction). Back to today, its 55 degrees outside. I tried something new today at the air handler, I opened the cover for the air handler where blower is located just to see what would happen, the out flow temp rose from 96 to 108 degrees before stat was satisfied, but during this time if I closed the cover the temp would stop rising and begin to fall, if I opened it again the temp stops falling and begins to rise again. What is going on here??

My first question, do you use set back on the t-stat?

I tried something new today at the air handler, I opened the cover for the air handler where blower is located just to see what would happen, the out flow temp rose from 96 to 108 degrees before stat was satisfied, but during this time if I closed the cover the temp would stop rising and begin to fall, if I opened it again the temp stops falling and begins to rise again. What is going on here??

Where is the air handler at?

When you open the cover there is less air flowing thru the coil so it is going to reach a higher temp.
