Hello! Is it OK to install twelve-inch porcelain tiles on the surround of a bathtub/shower? Is there a problem with the tiles being too heavy to adhere properly such that they could fall off at any time?

Going for larger tiles tend to be the trend. Using floor tile fr walls is also popular. The standard 4x4" wall tile is no longer trendy. With proper installation procedures, there is no reason why larger tiles can not be applied to walls.

I just finished doing the same thing at my rental cabin. Built a second bathroom on the structure 8 x 16 with facilities for laundry on one end and a 4x8 walk in shower on the other. The 12 x 12 tile I used on the floor, I used on the walls in the shower. I did use 6x6 on the shower floor since it had a slope to it and the 12x12 just wouldn't have worked well. I took some of the 6x6 tile I had left over, cut the edge off and cut them into 2x2 strips and used them for a decorative stripe about 5' up on the wall. But the 12x12, no problem in installing them on the wall.
Just for information, find your lowest point in the shower, mark up 12 1/8" up, make a level line around and install a 1x2 cleat under this line. Begin installing your tile above this cleat. It will give support as you go up using the crosses for spacing. Once it has set, you will most likely have to trim the bottoms of the lower tile to make them fit the contour of the floor while maintaining your grout line.
