Lighting, Light Fixtures, Ceiling and Exhaust Fans - Exposed Romex to Under Cabinet Light OK?

I'm installing new under cabinet flourescent lights. The romex cables (switched) come directly out of the wall just under the cabinets. Must I butt the flourescent light box as close as possible to the wall (and secure to the box with a cable clamp), or can the romex be exposed a few inches to center the fixture better?

Sleeve those few inches of cable with flexible conduit for protection. Even better would be to position everything so that the cable comes out of the wall directly into the fixture with no cable exposed, but that may not be possible in your situation.

Thank you John. To accomplish I think I'll add a standard square box secured under the cabinet that the romex can go into and through to the light fixture that can be secured to the other side of the box. That will give me 4-5 inches from the wall and help center the fixture better. Or, like you suggested, just a hunk of flex secured under the cabinet.

Appreciate your comments, I had a feeling exposed romex was a no-no...!
