I'm about to install new central air conditioning and have received conflicting information about the value of 2 speed compressors.

The benefis have been explained as reducing energy costs and removing more humidity.

On the negative side I've heard that it can contribute to mold as the system is designed to operate at the hiigher speed so when the compressor (and blower) are running at lower speed there's potentially more moisture remaining on the coils and this can contribute to mold.

I've also heard it explained that in hot areas, such as Austin Texas where we are, the unit will mostly run at the higher speed so the benefit is reduced.

I'm interested in hearing some expert opinions on this matter.

Sounds like you have had a sells man give you bad info so he can sell you his line. 1st load calculation are designed for the average high one would expect in your area. 2nd a properly sized unit will be able to keep your house cool at that high temp. Those high temps might only come along a few weeks a year. Cooler morning and evening temps will reduce load so a two speed or two stage would be better for energy. Also would be better when you don't get near those high temps because only one stage will be running. 3rd two stage will = less mold because it is removing more moisture out the air. Any unit can have mold, Id make sure you have your equipment serviced at least once a year.

This is a new sales tactic I have never heard of 2 stage units causing more mold, maybe because the opposite is true whoever told you that should be disqualified from doing any work for you as they are either not very knowledgeable or just dishonest
