I have an 18 year old toilet in my house that recently developed a problem.

When it worked correctly, after flushing, it fills at a normal pace. Once the plastic cup reaches the correct height, the water stops filling.

Now, when the cup reaches the right height, the water sounds like its stopping, but continues at a very slow pace. Maybe 1/10 - 1/20th of the normal pace. But its enough to cause water to slowly rise and drip out of the oveerflow tube into the bowl.

I've tried raising the cup by hand to see if it was too high, and it keeps on filling at the very slow pace.

Any ideas?

If it is the brand that Mr Howard has been kind enough to picture for us, it is repairable with a rubber seal just under the red cap.

I think that is the newest model fluidmaster ballcock, but all of the brands made by them use the same rubber seal for repair, unless something has changed recently and I am not aware of it. Sometimes you can just take that piece apart and flush out the dirt and all will be well. The rubber seal is about 2.00 at most hardware stores.

Dont forget to shut off the water before making any repairs.
