There was a ceiling fan here. I remodeled my kitchen and, though my wife and I are sill looking for the right fixture, I bought a cheapo one at Ikea to get us through the Thanksgiving.

This pic shows three wires coming into the junction box. Within the box we have:

Solo red
Solo black
Black and white tied together (white looks orange in pic, but it's white)
Black and black
ground

After calling my dad to get his opinion, I attached:

Light white to Black and white tied together
Black to solo black

Ground to ground.

Does this sound like the correct route?> It's working fine now and I didn't trip any breakers, but I don't want to burn the house down.

Here's a pic.

Dave do you have more than one switch? It looks to have been wired to accommodate the separate control of a light fixture and fan, so the red wire is not used without the light. Turn off the power,Pack it in, bolt it up.

Chandler.
Don't have more than one switch and yes there was a separate light and fan both controlled by the same knob (push knob in to turn fan on/off, twist to turn light on/off/dim). So you're saying what I did appears to be correct?

I mean, it's been on for an hour now with no ill effects. If there was going to be a problem I'd have seen it by now, right?

How was the fan connected?

That black wire connected to the two whites isn't right.

John, I looked at that 4 times, too, but I believe it is actually the white wire of an old cloth covered BX cable, what do you think?

It is white cloth covered. The switch is working properly. So far so good.
