My daughter is doing first new construction. She wants security in her flood lights, as well as being able to use the lights to see all the large trees on her property. Security is an issue, as she'll be out there much of the time by herself, and houses are not that close together.
Questions:
What are the differences in halogen flood lights vs regular flood lights in terms of illumination, and also distance of illumination?
With motion detector lights, is one able to turn them on, and keep them on, such as when having a moonlight dinner on the porch, and not using the motion detector aspect of it?

Hi Toots,
Not sure what you consider a "regular" flood light, but halogen lamps and incandescent lamps are almost exactly the same. Halogen lamps burn brighter per watt (more lumens), due to the halogen gas inside the lamp. (I could explain how the halogen cycle works if you want.)
Distance of illumination depends on the reflector and the lumens of the lamp. Most lamps will be marked with FLOOD or SPOT, which will determine the beam spread of the lamp.
Now, if you are talking about the squarish outdoor halogen flood fixtures, those run in much higher wattages, typically 300 or 500 watts. These fixtures are very bright, with a wide beam spread. They do make great security lights, but might be a bit much for a dinner party!
As for motion detectors, most are designed to do exactly what you are asking about. Usually, if you flip the switch off, then immediately back on, the lights will stay on until dawn. To set them back to motion control, you flip the switch back off, wait 10 seconds, then flip them back on. There will be an instruction sheet packed with the fixture explaining this.
