Ok, I'm sure most of you have received the old gag gift at Father's Day? The ultimate tool...the electric hammer?

Well, how bout this....

Craftsman NEXTEC™ 12 Volt Lithium-Ion Hammerhead Auto Hammer - Model 11818 at Sears.com (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00911818000P?mv=cf&vName=Tools&cName=Portable+Power+Tools&sbf=Brand&sbv=Craftsman)

It even says up to 3 1/2" nails.....this I have to see in operation.

Same principle as a palm nailer?

I guess so...but 100 PSI would seem to be more powerful than 12VDC. Like I said, gotta see one work sometime. Prob is all I have is one of those little neighborhood Sears here. One of you guys with a big store will have to give us a report.

I can already see MC Hammer advertising for that thing.

It's hammer time!

That reminds me of a new "tool" I saw for sale last year - a battery operated cresent wrench. Apparently you push a button and the jaw closes up........ why???
Has our society gotten that lazy?

I like power tools as much [or more:D].... than the next guy but some things just Don't make sense:p

That wrench is one of Black and Decker's ideas.Every year they come up with some sort of gimmicky gadget just in time for Christmas. They also sometimes whip something up for father's day.

Some of those ideas are ok some not so much.

Tell you one thing though, they always sell a huge amount of whatever it is.Those flashlights on stands and with flexible bodies...wow.

And those laser levels and electronic tape measures.Even though they don't work that well and aren't that accurate and it even says so on the package but they sold like hotcakes.

I'm sure there will be something this year.Maybe a home counterfeiting kit.Do it yourself gasoline refining.

How bout that powered tape measure that was 2X the size of an equivalent length manual model?

They sell to women who have no idea what to get for their father/husband/boyfriend/son as a gift. And they get used once or twice (within view of the giver) and then get relagated to the back of the drawer.

Thats why my wives stopped buying me tools w/o asking what I wanted.

I saw this tool advertised in "WOOD" magazine and decided to look it up when I got home from work. Then I found this forum when searching for information about it. Here's a video on Sear's website that shows it in action:
Craftsman.com | Garage of Knowledge (http://www.craftsman.com/garageofknowledge/)

I was not able to order it from Sears website. You had to pre-order it. I called them, and they said it won't be available until around December 11th.

I have some wood ceiling panels to nail up and this tool looks like a arm saver. It's less than 2 pounds. No cord, no air compressor, and almost any size nails. I can think of a lot of projects this might work ok with.

On their web site it said that there would be free shipping if ordered today. The guy on the phone couldn't give me free shipping, so he took 10% off the price of the hammer. He promised it would be shipped around December 11th. I also got a small 11" tool bag for $3, which is normally $5. The whole bill came to $108.

There was one review on Sears website from a guy in New England. Here's the link for his review, and also the specs on the tool:

This is my first post. I hope I did ok.

You did good, Lady.

I watched part of the video link on the tool in operation and my first thought was that it doesn't appear especially fast. Some of those nails being driven look like 2 or 3 regular hammer blows, but seem to take relatively long to drive.

I can think of plenty of times it might be useful as a supplement to a regular hammer, but not as a replacment.

I'd mistrust the review...you noticed he said he'd had it for a year? And they are just now selling and shipping them?

But thanks for the video link, I didn't find that when I looked. Might be very useful for someone with a physical problem, or as they advertise, in a cramped workspace.

I'll probably wait for chandler to buy one, see how he likes it...lol. All I need is ANOTHER battery operated tool, not compatible with anything else I own.

Maybe I'll buy the $150 titanium hammer instead....hmmmm.....

All I use a hammer for is to correct wood position so I can slam it with a nail gun. I couldn't in all honesty show up on a jobsite with this thing, sorry. Guys make enough fun of the guys with shiny new nail pouches, this thing may cause someone to fall off scaffolding laughing. Just give my my 28 oz waffle faced Estwing and I'll be happy. Hmmm, titanium, GG, you may be onto something.
And don't ever start off a post with the words "new tool".....got me salivating before I clicked.

I wanted to say something else.
But, I was afraid marksr would drop the hammer

In case anyone is referencing this page about that hammer, I have owned it now for a few days. It will not drive a 3-1/2" nail into wood. The manual states do not exceed 2.5" on page 10.

I have driven a few things in that are closer to 2-3/4", but not without some difficulty. The problem seems to be longevity. You can drive in 2" nails for a while, but after about 15 nails or so, it loses it's oomph.

I also found the battery charger to be flawed. It often fails to recognize a battery in need of a charge and will not charge it. It makes a whining sound inside like a failing capacitor which may or may not be the problem, I just don't know. A little googling showed me that other Nextec items have the same issue of failing to recharge the batteries.

Overall, though, I like this thing for a singular use: tight spots. It's a louder than a hammer is so make sure and use ear protection, but for tight spots, it came in really handy, and it is thinner than a palm nailer, so you can fit it into a few places that a palm nailer just cant reach--and without the hose.

However, if you cannot recharge the thing, its fairly useless. I will take it back and swap it for a new one and see if it still has that recharging issue. If it charges up fine, its a keeper, if not then it was an interesting experience.

Hope that helps anyone looking into it because I could not find a review anywhere from someone who was not looking to sell it to me first.

Captain...
Did you buy it or get a gift? And thanks for your unbiased review...kinda what I thought....

I bought it after I hurt myself repeatedly trying to drive screws and nails into a very tight space. This tool did the job that a normal assortment of tools could not do.

I looked at the size of the palm nailers (air gun driven) and they were too large.

If you rub your nails on wax the nextec hammer can put a larger size nail than normal in. You don't have to coat them or anything, just a single pass or two is enough to help it drive in. Of course, if you are doing more than a dozen nails, that is extremely tedious.

i bought a 19.2 drill and it done the same charging thing. the battery had to get completely cold before the charger would recognize it. maybe try it when its cold.

I have not tried that. Good idea. I'll let you know if it works.
