I have an old hanging unit heater made by Carrier for Payne. The fan turns on when the thermostat is turned up and turns off when it's turned down (after a delay). There is no voltage at the gas valve and the pilot won't light (pilot and ignitor combination). There is gas pressure coming into the unit as well as voltage. Does anyone have a procedure to troubleshoot a unit like this?

Are you sure you don't have to light the pilot? When you say the unit is old I see the style that has a flame switch type pilot and it needs to be manually lit.

I used the wrong word-I should have used pilot burner.
Since the post, I cleaned the pilot gas tube and got the pilot to manually light. However, the pilot will light when the gas control valve is in the pilot or the on position. When I advance the temperature, I get millivolts through the pilot burner/gas valve circuit. But, the gas valve won't open. One other question I have is: if the pilot goes out, what turns off the gas to the pilot? Your help is appreciated.

I suspect you do not have a millivolt system. Youwill have a 24 volt system me thinks. I think you have a flame switch pilot. Meaning it is a bi-metal safety pilot. When the flame goes out the bi-metal bends opening the circuit. However the pilot gas will continue to flow. Does the gas valve have a large red or white knob on the bottom? Does all this sound right?
