I have a new two story home with two Rheem heatpumps. Less than two years old. A large one for the down stairs and a smaller one for the upper. When the outside temperature is around 40* the up-stairs heat pump will come on for about 2 hours. During this time the auxilary heat will come on and off and it seems to have a lot of trouble heating the area. I haven't seem the downstairs unit go into AUX mode and it certainly don't have these kind of problems heating the area. Just after it was installed, I had the service tech back out several times to see if he could fix the problem. He had no clue. Well, here we are the next winter and I'm still having this problem. Does anyone have any advice that I can pass on to my tech?

First, what has been checked out? Does the unit have correct charge, and is he following manufactures procedure for checking charge? You can verify by contacting Rheem and asking what that is and ask if the tech is following it. Is the tstat working correctly?

Is the unit actually big enough for the heat loss in the area it is servicing? It is possible the unit is working correctly and is just too small and hence the aux heat is kicking on sooner than expected. Doing a Manual J (aka load calc) on its service area give you an idea.

The tstat is working. I swapped it with the downstairs unit.

I don't have any contact info for Rheem. They don't post that information. I don't know what the tech has checked.

My rough calculation shows I need 19356BTU for heat loss and 12106BTu for heat gain. If I'm correct, what I have is a 24,000BTU unit. If the unit was under sized, couldn't I shut off the vents and doors of a couple of the rooms and see a change in the performance? I'm guessing it would heat the area faster but come on more often due to the inefficient interior doors and walls.

What if the duct was under sized? I have checked to see if there was any obstuctions in the duct but don't know if they were sized correctly.
