I need approx 3000ft of fence for containing goats and sheep. Can install it myself. What type of fence and posts would be the most cost effective?

Welcome to the forums!
Barb wire and electric wire would probably be the cheapest. Goats can be hard to fence in - if there is a place they can get out, they'll find it. You could use either metal or wood posts, or even trees.

I have had good luck dealing with Kencove. They do nothing but fencing and can give you lots of good advice. Even when I am not buying they have always answered my questions.

High tensile electric wire would be the least expensive. Goat Facilities (http://www.sheepandgoat.com/articles/goathouse.htm)

All good advise above, but look in to "T" posts and V-mesh. May not be the cheapest, but would work better at containment than a single strand elec. wire IMO.

"but would work better at containment than a single strand elec. wire"
I don't know about sheep but 1 wire would never contain a goat. 2 elec and several barb would be needed. You can use 1 of the barb wires for a ground - IMO that works better than using the ground.
I don't know how the costs compare but it shouldn't be to hard to figure out a parts/price list and find out.
