We have 4 wall sconces that are to be hardwired and operated with a wall switch when installed.

We want to change the wiring to make them plug-in lights with a on-off switch in the wire in order to operate it.

Is this possible and if so how?

Thank youl

There are many ways to do this, all pretty simple. You can eliminate the switch (connecting the wires and covering the box with a blank cover plate), or you can leave the switch there and leave it on all the time.

You can either put a receptacle in the box where the sconces now are, moving the sconces over a bit, or you can wire new receptacle boxes a short distance from each sconce electrical box.

There are dozens of different possibilities for exactly how to do this. The answer for you depends on exactly how you want it to look and the exact layout of the room.

Just curious, but why do you want to do this? Do you just want to be able to turn each sconce on and off individually? If so, I would prefer to just mount a wall switch near each sconce and use it to turn the sconce on and off.

I want to be able to operate the sconces as if they were lamps.

I don't want to have to fish the wiring from the plug up the wall to a box and into the sconces. Then I'll have to add switch plates, etc.

I just want to change the wiring in the sconce from hard wired and wall switch to plug into an outlet.

Hope that's a better explanation. Sorry - new to the wiring thing.

So can you just put a receptacle into the box where the sconce is mounted?

There is no box - the sconces are not mounted on the wall yet - we're trying to change the wiring before we do. The wall switch in place has 3 toggles - one for each set of recessed lights (of which there are 2) and one for the ceiling fans, so there are no open spots for additional lights, that's one reason we can't add them to the existing switch and the 2nd reason is - don't know how to splice off the wiring to add 4 additional lights in the room. Converting the wiring in the sconces - if possible, of course, - will save us a lot of work and money - all we'll have to do is plug in the sconces.
