We have a 40gal. Kenmore hot water heater, just a few years old, and I noticed that it had run continuously for several hours without kicking off. The hot water from the tap is scalding hot.
Hubby turned BOTH thermostats way down to get it to kick off, to no avail. We had to throw the breaker to stop it for the night. Could it possibly be both thermostats malfunctioning at the same time?
Any ideas/infor certainly appreciated.

It is possible that only one thermostat is malfunctioning and it is probably the top one, since they will heat independently from each other. However, no more expensive than they are, and you will have the water heater down for repair, replace them both. They have the same age on them and they will die (as fate would have it) at nearly the same time, sort of like light bulbs.
Standard words of caution.....turn off the breaker, take a digital picture of your wiring before you start the tear down and replace the wiring exactly as you took it off. Let us know how it goes.
