What is your best suggestion to level a toilet? I removed an older toilet and replaced it with a new one. Apparently when the original flange was installed it sits about 1/2" above the floor. The old toilet set down far enough to sit on the floor. The new toilet is far too high to use shims (at least 1/2"). What is the easiest way to level it and provide a solid base?

Replace the flange. Not too many other options when its that high.

If the top of the flange is 1/2" above the finished floor level and not any more, you should be fine and maybe you are not placing the toilet on the flange properly. If it is 1/2" to the bottom of the flange, that will make it almost an inch to the top of the flange and that is too much. If this is the case, adding flooring, shims or lowering the closet flange are your only choices. All the new toilets will be about the same clearance underneath.

The old flange is put on with PVC glue. How to you get it off?

Sawzall or inside pipe cutter.
