:wall:I have an old barn (circa late 1800s) that is in a state of disrepair appx 100x40 & 40 ft tall. Barn is made of elm & cottonwood. Would like to know if anyone has a safe & efficient method of DIY dismantling so that the wood may be saved for sale and recycling.

Hi Marshhollow,

Having seen this done, unless you know construction, or have someone assisting you that does, I don't recommend this type of project as a DIY project. I did a google with the term:
how to dismantle a barn
and found this site that explains the order of deconstruction.

You may want to check around for suppliers of old salvaged lumber/flooring/boards in your area. They may dismantle it for you or recommend someone who will. All that stuff has to come from somewhere. Though I don't know whether those species are in much demand.

Don't expect to get much money if any, if that is your goal. They provide the labor and haul away, they keep any money. You get rid of the barn.

There are organizations interested in preserving historic barns. Barn Preservation Organizations (http://www.iowabarnfoundation.org/organizations.htm)

You may have some success in selling the old barn. http://www.oldbarnwoodsite.com/

I agree, find a company that salvages old barns. Believe it or not, barns are part of American history. Barns are part of a community, part of that communities culture, a land mark, and a source of that communities cultural history.

You may be able to get the barn listed as a national landmark, national treasure. Once listed a host of other options open up to you. There is great interest in preserving our National History.
