hay hay

yesterday (nov 5th) we had new carpet put in most of the house, we had a dog thats urin caused damage to the wood under the padding so our carpet installer used what i think was kril oil based primer/sealer. I dont smell any more dog mess however my mother has a rare blood disorder that makes her incredibly susceptible to fumes, i had all the windows open most of the night and it got realy cold (55F) except in my moms room where we havent had carpet installed yet (will be done today) but im gana make sure they dont use sealer in there. I would like to know what is the best way to remove these fumes, when i was about to go to bed i turned on the furnace and closed the windows and the fumes seemed to get worse, im guessing that the cold probobly traped fumes in the padding and when i heated things up it was reliesed but im not a expert and the carpet installers dont speak much english.

any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

Off gassing of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) is a common problem with many household furnishings and building materials. Some people are more sensitive to VOCs than others, especially youngsters and the elderly and those with health conditions such as allergies, respiratory, problems, etc.

Part of 'going green' is to be aware of offgassing of VOCs and to not bring items or materials that contain formaldehyde or other chemicals that offgas. The Carpet Rug Institute recommends optimum ventilation during new carpet installation and that those sensitive to odors should be absent.

There are Green Label flooring products available--carpet, cushion, and adhesives--with lower or no emissions that can have less impact on air quality in the home. Green Label / Green Label Plus (http://www.carpet-rug.org/commercial-customers/green-building-and-the-environment/green-label-plus/index.cfm)

Typically, new installation VOCs dissipate within 48-72 hours. The VOCs that you smell may be from the sealer used beneath the carpet. If the sealer was still offgassing at the time of the installation, then covering over with carpet and cushion will prolong the offgassing of the sealer.

The only recommendation for offgassing is maximum ventilation. Open windows and use fans to exhaust odors outdoors. Those who are sensitive to VOCs should stay with friends or relatives for a few days.
