I am looking to buy a craftsman 3/4" drive socket and ratchet set. I will be using them to make repairs on my car. I can only find these in 12 point. Do they not make any large sockets in 6 point?

Sure they do. All the 3/4" sockets for my impact wrench are 6 pt. U can get a whole set at Harbor Freight for little or nothing. I'm also sure the make regular 3/4" 6 pt sockets but plan A is pretty cheap and effective.

Perhaps I may need some impact sockets. I plan to change the driveaxle on my car, and the driveaxle hub nut is supposed to be torqued to around 180 ft. lbs. I am a little concerned about using a 12 pt. socket on something that tight. As far as putting it back on,can I set it to that torque setting with an impact or do I need a torque wrench?

Are you sure you want to pay for a complete 3/4" drive set? it can get kind of pricey

Generally for working on cars, 1/2" drive would be adequate. I have a 3/4" set of impact sockets but have always relied on my 1/2" ratchet or impact along with a 1/2"-3/4" adapter....with no issues to speak of.

I doubt you could get an accurate reading using an impact - a torque wrench [either beam or clicker] would be best.

180 ft lbs is nothing. A good 3/8 dr. impact will take that off in 1 sec. And I'm sure you can get a 1/2 drive socket to fit that nut. No need to splurge on a 3/4 set, that's for Mac trucks and backhoes.

I retired from the railroad and we had 6 point sockets all the way to 4 inch. They were spline drive, but I have some 1 in.drive up to 2 inches. As stated, I have only needed a larger drive than 1/2 inch on a couple of occasion. I would get impact sockets, 6 pt., for safety reasons. A chrome non-impact socket will do SERIOUS damage when it comes apart.

3/4 drive on a car? There isn't anything on a car big enough that would require a 3/4 inch drive socket.

1/2" drive is more than adequate for anything on a car and

NO NO NO. am impact gun is not to be used to set the torque on anything. I have a gun that kicks about 250 ft/lbs and another that kicks about 400 ft/lbs.

There is absolutely no accuracy in an impact gun.

a torque wrench is the only way to set a torque.

btw: I have done hundreds of drive axles and never never needed anything bigger than 1/2" guns. Dang, the last couple I did, I did with no power tools at all.
