Hi! I am redoing my family room. I love this house but hate the windows. I feel so limited in what I can do with them. I have high ,wide, short windows. Each of 2 brick walls has a set of two adjoining windows. Each window is 35"wide and 27" long with a 3 inch bar in the middle. They are transom style windows, inset into a solid brick wall. There is a 4" inset ledge all the way around. Total inset is 74"wide by 27" high. Currently I have outside mounted vertical blinds. Due to the width I had to put two blinds which join in the middle. I have a valance and curtains at the sides (these do not close) this set-up ends three inches below the window sash. Bottom of window is 42 inches from the floor. I hate the look mainly because it clashes with the horizontal pattern of the bricks. Any suggestions for something new would be GREATLY appreciated.

Long, flowing panels that go all the way to the floor! Depending on height of ceiling, you may want to opt to mount hardware higher and near ceiling height for illusion of greater height. Just because window sill stops at 42" above the floor, does not mean that window treatments have to stop there. Too, treat the two windows as one for a more unified look. You can also give the illusion of wider windows by extending the rod beyond the width of windows on both sides and add extra panels.

You might want to consider inside mount shades or blinds instead, and have two that cover only the windows, rather than one wide one. This will already make the spance look narrower.
Yes, get floor length panels, not short ones, which will give the illusion of taller windows, rather than wide, squatty ones, which is what the short panels are doing. Also, try to get them fuller and mount the rod not so far out, but instead bring them in further on the sides to make the window look not so wide. Or hang 3 panels, one on each side and one in the middle of the two windows, which will make it look like 2 separate, more narrow windows.
If you decide to keep the verticals and they're outside mount, you should get a rod with a larger projection, so the verticals don't hit the panels when they're open.
Another thing, ditch the valance, which is only adding to the "too wide, too short" look.
Think vertical lines. :D
