What's the difference between the two? Ran outa plumbers putty today while installing a drain. Thought I had some but it was Glazing compound. Looks and smells the same but I went all the way back to HD and bought some Plumbers Putty to finish the job. Just curious if it was actually the same stuff.

No it is not the same.It probably smells the same because both products contain oils.Plumbers putty does not set up rock hard like glazing.A drain is going to expand and contract every time it is exposed to hot and/or cold water and glazing would crack. Also glazing would not have the properties PP has that allows you to wipe away excess etc.

When I saw this thread I thought maybe someone was going to say they had used glazing as a form of plumbers putty. In a 30 year wild and whacky life in the hardware business it would have been a first to have heard that.

And I was thinking the opposite...PP in place of GC, wonder how long that would last as well?
