Does anyone know what would cause a screaching sound when the hot water is turned on in my tub/shower?

What type of faucet do you have?If it's a two handle faucet and especially with some age on it you may have a loose or damaged washer on that stem that needs repair or replacement. If there is an in line valve somewhere else on that line it too may have a loose or damaged washer.

Probably be a good idea to rework both sides including any valves in the supply lines.

It is an old 2 handle Price Phister. Probably came with the house new about 30 years ago (just guessing). How do I get to the in-line valve? The plumbing in this house is all in one area that I can look down into from the attic but not enough room for a person to drop down into. Thanks for your help!

With an old faucet like that and the situation you have I'd be thinking about rebuilding the stems if that hasn't been done lately/in years etc and looking it over for age related wear and damage.

As for in line valves, when you have a home this old etc it's unclear if there are any valves or where they may be.first place to look is inside any access panel that might be behind the faucet in a wall or closet etc that backs up to this area. Then look anywhere the water lines are accessible including crawl spaces etc.there may not be any in line valves and if that is the case you will have to turn off the whole house to work on the faucet.

The stems are behind the handles and reach into the wall of the shower. It is possible that you will have to open up the holes in the wall where they pass through to remove them.If there is trim around the opening or as part of the stem you will need to remove it and it should screw off. They are held in place by one or more bushing like parts that must be removed with deep sockets.A tool kit called a "plumbers socket set" is generally used.It runs about ten dollars at any hardware store.

Once you get them out you should replace all washers,gasket,o-rings etc on them.Do both sides.Examine them for damage and wear.

There are many many varieties of washers etc.you need to use the exact proper ones so take the stems with you to a hardware store with knowledgeable saleshelp or a plumbing supply that sells to the public for proper matching of the parts.

If you discover damage on the stems you need to replace them.again these must be exact replacements. There is a stem set up at most hardware or plumbing retailers for proper replacement and you'll need the old ones for that.Stems are mostly brass and brass weakens with age so take a good look at them.

The saleshelp can help you with specifics for repairing your faucet and the stems in it.It sounds like you just need a regular rebuilding of these faucets. If work has been done to them in recent times then you may have just a loosened washer etc but you still need to get the stems out to check.
