I have a staircase from the 1st floor to the 2nd (main) floor in my townhouse with a recessed light at the landing about 1/2 way up the steps. I would like to put a cfl in there, but need the more instant on of an incandescent. I have various cfl reflector bulbs around the house in recessed fixtures, but mostof them seem to take a bit of time to get up to full brightness (anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes). I did see a conversion kit from TCP that puts a reflector in the fixture and then a regular cfl spiral bulb (which seem to brighten up quicker than the PAR 30 variety for some reason), and also a kit from Nora Lighting than uses the screw in tube fluorescent bulbs.

Any thoughts appreciated. Need something instant or I will never hear the end of it fromthe wife!

CFL's are usually going to be "instant on", depending upon the brand, meaning that there is no delay for the light coming on when you flip the switch. However, no matter the brand, they will all take around thirty seconds to one minute or so to achieve their full brightness when used in an interior application.
