Our condo has a prefabricated wood-burning fireplace (which we've never used and don't plan to). It has a 7- to 8-inch black slate surround and 20-inch slate hearth. The wall is drywall.

I would like to remove the slate surround and hearth and replace it with another material, one that I can use on the entire wall. I'm thinking of some sort of tile, like ceramic, or a thin brick panel. (Stone or marble are probably too expensive for my budget.) I plan to do the job myself.

I'm wondering about fire code. Are most of the ceramic tiles you find in Home Depot, Lowes, etc. fire code compliant? They're always advertised for floors or countertops, but I never see anything about using them for a fireplace surround. Same question for thin brick paneling - is this material typically fire code compliant?

Also, do I have to hire a contractor to confirm the material I'm using is within code?

Thanks.
