i am in the process of remodeling my bath and when i pulled the old tub out there were little piles of concrete at either end. what are they for and i need to remove and replace them.

The dollops of thinset were placed there to add strength to the flimsy bottom of your tub. You should clean them up and put more there when you install your new tub. Usually you put enough in a pile so it will squish out along the bottom of the tub.
