hey guys, newbie here, but i am putting a chandeleir up in place of a ceiling fan. having issues getting it to work properly, i took the fan down, and what i have in the ceiling is this....
two sets of wires coming into the hole where the fan was. 1 set is a white and a black, and one set is a white, black and a red. with ground wires of course. the light i am putting up, has just a ground and 2 wires, it is just a brown wire with 2 sides, which i assume is a hot and a neutral. having issues figuring out what to hook together to make it work. there is a 2 switches on either side of the kitchen.
i was told that the 2 whites from the ceiling go together, than the 2 blacks have to go to the light, just have to figure out which ones go to which, and to just cap the red. but i have tried the black to each of the wires on the light, and it doesnt work.
does anyone know what i am doing wrong? thanks!

There are a number of possibilities.
We could guess, and there's a pretty good chance we could guess correctly, but I'd prefer not to go there yet.
If you can tell us exactly how the ceiling fan was previously connected, then this will be really easy and we won't have to guess.
If you don't know how the ceiling fan was previously connected, then we can still figure it out but we're going to want you to describe all the wiring and connections at the switch boxes on the wall.
Also, examine that brown cord very carefully. You'll see that one of the two nearly-identical wires has a ridge or stripe on it, and the other does not. The one with the ridge or stripe is the neutral, and the other is the hot.

ok, yep, i see one of the browns is ridged.
at the switches, one of the switches has a black and a red connected to it, and one has a red and a white connected to it. what confuses me is only one red up in the ceiling where the light will hang. but i am sure you guys will know why that is, or how it is possible. thanks in advance for your help!

Okay, your description of the wiring at the switches is incomplete and doesn't make much sense anyway, so I'm going to fall back to guessing. This is probably correct.
At the ceiling, connect the two black wires in the box to each other, but not to your fixture.
Connect the two white wires to each other, and to the ribbed wire from your fixture.
Connect the red wire from the ceiling to the non-ribbed wire from you fixture.
