Everyone,
Just installed 1/2 inch Hardibacker board in the shower surround area. I plan on putting cultured marble slabs for the shower walls. Is there a need to apply a coat of thinset in the places the boards meet? I overlapped the corners so I thought that as long as I seal it really good with silicone once the marble walls are in place I should be good to go. Does this sound about right?

Lets back up a little.
Did you install a poly barrier against the studs before you applied your hardibacker? You should have.
You do not caulk the board gaps. You need to apply fiberglass mesh tape and thinset over the gaps.
What type of shower floor is there?
The gap between the tile/slab needs to be filled with a non sanded grout.

There is a tub and the three walls are backed by the Hardibacker board. I read the instructions that came with the board along with those on their website and there was no mention of putting up a poly barrier. BTW, considering that the walls are slabs of a solid surface material what is the need for applying the fiberglass mesh and thinset?

Per code, vapor barrier needs to be up on the studs.
Per Hardibacker instructions, you need to tape and mud the board seams.
James Hardie: HardieBacker 500 backerboard (http://www.jameshardie.com/homeowner/products_backerboard_halfInch.shtml?openTab=jsnavLink4)
Taping the seams makes the boards monolithic as one panel to prevent movement.
What setting material are you using to set these slabs?
