looking for an alternative to scraping off old creosote that leaked between bricks on chimney 150 years old. chimney is adequately lined at this time. the chimney is exposed indoors to roof. can the chimney be encased with Duroc instead of scraping outside/covering with stucco? Is this a safe alternative?
We will be installing a new wood stove.
Thanks

It seems a pity to cover over 100 y.o. bricks which were likely handmade, but folks do update and resurface interior fireplaces and chimneys. Of course, you can scrape off as much of the creosote that you can and use a masonry soot cleaner to clean the brick. There is no guarantee that after so many years of leaking that you will be able to remove all stains.
